Community Power: Lake Dunstan Trail Launches Supporter Initiative

In a bid to strengthen community bonds and secure a long-term future for the Lake Dunstan Trail, Southern Lakes Trails Trust is unveiling an exciting new Supporters Programme.  Since opening May 2021, the Lake Dunstan Trail has taken both locals and tourists by storm, with over 152,000 trailblazers having passed the counter at Carrick. It's time to harness that enthusiasm and commitment.

The trail, now a ‘Great Ride’ and prized asset for the region, has garnered immense local pride. Southern Lakes Trails chief executive Janeen Wood emphasizes the importance of this connection: "The Trail has become a community treasure, and we're grateful for the wonderful support we've getting. Our Supporters Programme aims to foster even closer ties with trail users."

The trail's success has not come without its challenges, particularly in the face of severe weather events. There are plans to enhance the trail's infrastructure, including adding shelters, seating, repairing weather-damaged sections, stabilizing trail edges, and installing new facilities such as an additional toilet and bike stands. Improved signage is also on the agenda, but it all requires funding.

This is where the Supporters Programme comes into play, offering families and individuals the chance to actively contribute to the preservation and betterment of this natural wonder.

"We've achieved so much with the Lake Dunstan Trail; now we're focused on the long term," Janeen explains. "We want to maintain the trail's magical, pristine, and safe qualities that captivate visitors daily. To achieve this, we need help."

The Central Lakes Trust provides some maintenance funding for tasks like weed control and spot repairs, however the trail relies heavily on volunteer support. Unlike projects funded through rates, the trust operates as a registered charity, making it dependent on the generosity of supporters.

With Cromwell poised to become the hub connecting new trails from Wānaka and Queenstown, the future looks exciting.

“It’s a challenging trail, so breathtaking. I watch people go past, and hear the comments. I feel so much pride when I look across the lake at what we’ve all achieved. It really is a team effort.”
